Born and raised in Aberdare in the South Wales Valleys, Welsh bass-baritone Emyr Wyn Jones is an alumnus of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio.
Making his role debut as Dulcamara L’elisir d’amore for Longborough Festival this summer, other engagements in 2023 include a repertory season with If Opera performing Lorek Fedora, Bertrand Iolanta, and White Knight in Will Todd’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Future engagements include performances at Llandaff Cathedral and a return to Opera North.
In the 21/22 Season, he made his debuts at Wexford Opera Festival and at Scottish Opera making his role debut as Masetto in Sir Thomas Allen’s production of Don Giovanni.
Professionally he has performed for Opera North, Grange Park Opera, Longborough Festival Opera, and Mid Wales Opera. Roles have included Figaro The Marriage of Figaro, Leporello Don Giovanni, Colline La Bohème, Papageno The Magic Flute, and Sacristan Tosca. While training he performed the title role in Verdi’s Falstaff, directed by Martin Constantine and conducted by the internationally acclaimed Maestro Carlo Rizzi. He has also enjoyed invitational performances at the St Endellion Festival performing Mr Flint Billy Budd, Schelkalov/Boyar Khruschov Boris Godunov, and Henry Cuffe Gloriana.
Popular in concert and recital, highlights have included the Commemoration of the Somme concert, Hallé Orchestra conducted by Sir Mark Elder, recitals at London’s St Martin-in-the-Fields, appearances on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru, and S4C television, televised performances from Moscow across Russia as part of the UK Russia Year of Music 2019, and the special invitation from Sir Bryn Terfel to perform ‘Non più andrai’ in a televised celebration of his career, Bywyd Trwy Gân [Life Through Song] for S4C.
In 2021 and 2022, he filmed and recorded the roles of Doctor Rees and Yncl Wil for a newly commissioned film Un Nos Ola Leuad [One Moonlit Night]. Commissioned by Channel 4, S4C, and set for broadcast in 2023, the film is based on a popular Welsh novel and will be the first ever Welsh language opera to be broadcast on British television.
