Austrian baritone Lukas Kargl is in high demand in opera and concert throughout the UK and Europe. After initial training at Vienna’s University for Music and Performing Arts, he studied with Rudolf Piernay at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, gaining his MMus with Distinction in 2006 and continuing on the School’s renowned Opera Course. Lukas has been a Britten-Pears Young Artist and a Samling Foundation Scholar, was the winner of GSMD’s Patrick Libby Prize and the recipient of the coveted Youngster of Arts Prize from the city of St. Pölten, Austria.

In 2005 Lukas was a member of the Bayreuth Festival chorus and in 2009 made Glyndebourne Festival debut and as Phoebus in The Fairy Queen under William Christie (also at the BBC Proms). Other highlights include singing Mozart’s Don Giovanni at L’Opera Fabrique Grenoble, Escamillo (Carmen) for Le concert de poche and Polyphemus (Handel, Acis and Galatea) for New European Opera in France. He has also recently performed Guglielmo (Così fan Tutte) at Clonter Opera, UK, and both Dr. Falke (Die Fledermaus) and Herr Fluth (Nicolai, Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor) at Schlossfestspiele Zwingenberg in Germany. He returns in Summer 2014 to sing the title role in Lortzing’s Zar und Zimmerman.

In the UK, Lukas has performed at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Cadogan Hall, the Barbican Hall and St John’s Smith Square, as well as at the Aldeburgh Easter Festival and the Oxford Lieder Festival. He has appeared widely on the continent, in such prestigious venues as the Berliner Philharmonie and the Orlandosaal in Munich, Abbaye de Fontevraud in France, and the Skupina Festival in Slovenia. More recently, Lukas made his Aix-en-Provence debut with Café Zimmerman, singing Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at the Grand Theatre.

Alongside his international career, Lukas maintains strong musical ties with Austria, having performed at the Brucknerhaus Linz, the Musikverein Vienna, and at St. Pölten’s Festspielhaus and ‘Festival musica sacra’, where he returns frequently for engagements.
