JOHN  GIBBONS


John Gibbons works with most major British orchestras including the BBC Symphony and Concert Orchestras, LPO, CBSO, Bournemouth, Ulster, and RPO with whom he conducted the first Classic FM ‘Hall of Fame’ Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. He is Music Director of Worthing Symphony Orchestra – the professional orchestra of West Sussex as well as Northampton Symphony Orchestra, Ealing Symphony Orchestra and St Albans Chamber Choir.

He has recorded four discs of William Wordsworth and Malcolm Arnold’s Ninth Symphony with the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra for Toccata Classics; Skalkottas’s Greek Dances with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Arthur Benjamin’s string concertos with the RSNO, Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony with completion by Nors Josephson with the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra on Danacord and four Mozart Piano Concertos with Idil Biret, two with the London Mozart Players and two with Worthing Symphony Orchestra. 

John conducted Laura Rossi’s film score to The Battle of Ancre and conducted the BBC
Concert Orchestra in the Royal Festival Hall centenary live screening of her score for The Battle of the Somme. In March 2023 John and Ealing Symphony Orchestra revive Laura Rossi’s orchestral work Jailhouse Graffiti.   

John Gibbons studied music at Queens’ College, Cambridge, the Royal Academy of Music,  and the Royal College of Music winning numerous awards as a conductor, pianist, and accompanist. John is also a composer and arranger with notable performances in both St Albans Abbey and Clifton Cathedral. Recent works include a song cycle and the Missa in honroem Ioannis Paulus PPI. John assisted Sir John Eliot Gardiner on the Beethoven Leonore project and the Philips recording of music by Percy Grainger. He was second conductor to Leonard Slatkin for Ives’s Fourth Symphony with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and assisted on a number of shows at the Royal Opera House.

He has conducted numerous operas for Opera Holland Park, La Bohème for the Spier Festival in South Africa, toured Hansel & Gretel in Wales and Ireland with WNO, Opera Northern Ireland and Opera Theatre Company, and conducted operas for ETO.
