Ralph van Raat
(1978) studied piano at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Prof. Ton
Hartsuiker and Prof. Willem Brons, graduating with distinction. He then
furthered his studies with Claude Helffer in Paris, Ursula Oppens at
Chicago’s Northwestern University, and Pierre-Laurent Aimard at the
Musikhochschule in Cologne. Ralph van Raat has performed with, among
others, the Nieuw Ensemble, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Frankfurt,
the Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the London Sinfonietta. He has
played at various festivals including the Holland Festival, the Time of
Music festival in Viitasaari, Finland, and the Tanglewood Summer
Festival in the United States. His recording of the complete piano
works of Louis Andriessen with the Attacca label was selected as one of
the top 10 CDs of 2005 by the Dutch paper Trouw, and his ‘Fingerprints’
recording (of works by Andriessen, Keuris, Kunst, Loevendie, and van
Onna) was nominated for an Edison Classical Music Award in 2005.
Among the prizes Ralph has won are the Second Prize
and Donemus-Prize (for Contemporary Music) of the Princess Christina
Competition (1995); the Stipend-Prize Darmstadt during the
“Internationale Ferienkurse fur Neue Musik” in Darmstadt (Germany,
1998); First Prize of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters
Competition (1999); the Philip Morris Arts Award (2003); the Elisabeth
Everts Prize (2005); the international Borletti-Buitoni Fellowship
(2005) and the VSCD Classical Music Prize (2005).
With the help of a Borletti-Buitoni fellowship, Ralph van Raat has commissioned a piano concerto from composer Gavin Bryars.
