Austrian baritone Lukas Kargl studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (GSMD), London, receiving his MMus with Distinction in 2006, and completed his studies on the GSMD Opera Course in 2008, under the tutelage of Rudolf Piernay.

He is a Britten-Pears Young Artist and a Samling Scholar, and reached the semi-finals in both the 2009 International Das Lied Competition in Berlin and the 2007 Hugo Wolf Academy International Competition in the Art of Lied, Stuttgart. He was awarded the Patrick Libby Prize, GSMD, London (2007) and the Youngsters of Arts Prize, St. Pölten (2005).

Lukas Kargl made his debut at the Glyndebourne Festival and at the BBC Proms 2009 as Phoebus (Purcell, Fairy Queen) under William Christie.

His other operatic roles include Guglielmo (Mozart, Cosi fan Tutte) at Clonter Opera; Polyphemus (Handel, Acis and Galatea) for New European Opera; Dancaïro (Bizet, Carmen) at Schlossfestspiele Zwingenberg (Germany); Sam (Bernstein, Trouble in Tahiti) at the Wiener Musikverein; Papageno (Mozart, Die Zauberflöte); the Count (R. Strauss, Capriccio); Bobinet (Offenbach, La vie parisienne) and Don Parmenione (Rossini, L’occasione fa il ladro) at GSMD; Badger/Priest (Janacek, Cunning Little Vixen)andLorenzo (Bellini, I Capuleti e i Montecchi) at Schosstheater Schönbrunn, Vienna.

Lukas has appeared in festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, including the Barbican Hall, Cadogan Hall and St John’s, Smith Square in London; the Oxford Lieder Festival; the Orlandosaal in Munich; Abbaye de Fontevraud (France); Brucknerhaus Linz, the Festspielhaus and Festival musica sacra in St.Pölten and the Skupina Festival (Slovenia).

Recent engagements include Don Giovanni (Mozart, Don Giovanni) in Grenoble; Haydns Harmoniemesse at the Aldeburgh Easter Festival; performances at the Brucknerhaus Linz, Zwingenberger Festspiele, the National Portrait Gallery in London.
