Evan Christ is the Associate Music Director (Erste Kapellmeister) of the Wuppertaler Bühnen (Wuppertal Opera). Prior
to this he spent two years as Associate Music Director, and then
Interim Music Director of the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg.
Christ was born into a musical family in Los
Angeles. At the age of 21 he became the Assistant Conductor of the
Nevada Symphony Orchestra. In 1993 Christ received his BA with honors
in Mathematics and Music from Harvard University. During his studies he
founded the Las Vegas Music Festival, which he still returns to conduct
as Conductor Laureate. In 1993, Christ came to Europe to study piano
and oboe for two years at the Liszt Academy of Music in
Budapest and thereafter received his Masters in Orchestral Conducting
(Gert Bahner) and Vocal Accompanying from the Leipzig Conservatory in
2000. In 1997 he also founded the Mendelssohn-Kammerorchester Leipzig, which received numerous excellent reviews for its concert series in the Gewandhaus, European tours, and CDs.
In October 2006, Christ was awarded a €10.000 Career
Prize as part of the German Conducting Competition after a concert in
the Philharmonie with the Deutsches Symphony Orchestra Berlin. As a
result he will be music director of the Bad Homberg orchestral concert
series for the 2007-2008 season.
Christ is one of 6 young conductors selected by the German Conductor's League (Dirigentenforum) for its elite Maestros für Morgen Artists Roster.
